The Passing of Luciano

This from Bernard Holland's Obituary of Luciano Pavarotti in today's New York Times:

“I’m not a politician, I’m a musician,” [Pavarotti] told the BBC Music Magazine in an April 1998 article about his efforts for Bosnia. “I care about giving people a place where they can go to enjoy themselves and to begin to live again. To the man you have to give the spirit, and when you give him the spirit, you have done everything.”

I couldn't agree more!

Music has the possibility to be more powerful than any gun in the world. The work we do as artists can literally change lives. I believe in the power of beauty. I believe in the power of a great work of art. I hope that you do also.

My friend and fellow note scribbler David T Little (check out his site here) posted the NYT quote on his blog this morning.

David sees a powerful possibility in music to affect social change. The title of his blog "Music as a Weapon" says it all.

I think that his blog and thoughts on the power of music offer insight into both his music and his understanding of himself as an artist.

All best,
jp

Welcome Composers and New Music Community

Hello All!

Welcome to the Shenandoah Composers Forum blog site. The purpose of this site is to offer an online forum where students and faculty may continue discussions from the in class meetings as well as discuss the week's listening or whatever 'new music' topics might come up.

Following each week's in class meeting, I will create a post with the topic of the day.

Please feel free to post a comment or to create your own new post.

PLEASE spell-check your entries and be courteous to all those on this forum.

In order to post to this forum you MUST email me your email address and register as a blogger user.

Please contact me with your email at: jpuckett@su.edu

Please also encourage any of your non-composer classmates who are interested in new music to both come to the in class meeting and participate in this blog.

All best wishes!
